Shiok!

A word commonly used in Singapore and Malaysia which conveys a strong feeling of sheer pleasure and happiness.  That's exactly how I felt when I ate at this hole in the wall place in the Bonifacio area.  Born out of love (girlfriend-pushes-chef-boyfriend-to-put-up-the-restaurant type of story), Shiok serves Singaporean and Asian meals at very affordable prices.

Open kitchen

Quite a small place with seating capacity of about 30 only

The menu

A closer look at the menu

On the table

Every time I eat in any Asian restaurant, I always look for Hainanese chicken rice.  A dish originated from Hainan, China, hence the name, other neighboring countries like Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore (my favorite) have created their own versions.

I can eat this everyday.  Their version is lean and very tasty.  Shiok-lah!

Extra rice please! *wink*

Char kway teow which literally means "stir-fried rice cake strips"

Roti prata -- Perfect appetizer

Iced horlicks

I'm so addicted to Horlicks!  Where can I get this in Manila?!

Affordably priced good food.  Need I say more?

A Mix of Everything at Yakimix

Are you hungry yet?

If you love Japanese, Korean, Cantonese food or all of the above, Yakimix is the perfect place for you.

Happy camper!

For Php500++ per person, you got to eat as much sushi, sashimi, tempura and a dozen other meat and seafood you can cook using the smokeless grill on your table.

Smokeless grill

Japanese section -- I love the tuna and salmon sashimi!

Oh wait! They also have fried rice, noodles, sweet and sour pork, beef in teriyaki sauce, kimchi, among many others.

Cantonese and Korean section

The dessert section is a major fail though.  The cakes, tarts and other sweets were all bland.  Good thing there's Selecta ice cream in case you cannot end a meal without having dessert like me.

Dessert section

Getting a table without prior reservations at Yakimix is like winning the 600M lottery.  Okay, that was an exaggeration.  But really, the waiting list here is too long so if you forgot to reserve, better come early since half of the tables are given to walk-in customers.

Early bird.  Time check: 1800H

I make Mango Sango my drink instead of ordering juice or iced tea

After x no. of plates, this is what was left.

Didn't have the courage to eat all of that wasabi!

Banapple

As what they say, "Always leave room for dessert."  So after a very fulfilling dinner at BonChon, we transferred to the neighboring dessert place, Banapple to satisfy our sweet cravings.

Dessert heaven
On the table

Dark chocolate tiramisu cheesecake -- Winner!  Everybody loved it.  I'm a
sucker for dark chocolate and cheesecake so the combination thrilled me

Banoffee pie -- Their bestseller, but I've tried better versions

I was supposed to order the Strawberry cheesecake but it was out of stock already.

White chocolate truffle berry cheesecake -- Looks yummy!

Amici: A Taste of Italy

Craving for authentic and affordable Italian food?

From the original Don Bosco canteen, Amici now has six branches all over the Metro. According to the introduction written on the menu, it all started when Salesian Italian missionary Fr. Gianluigi Colombo thought of opening up an authentic Italian place in Don Bosco initially for the faculty and students back in 2001 and the rest is well, history.

Fast food style where you place your order and pay at the counter

On the table

Cannelloni Agli Spinaci - Even if you're not much of a veggie-eater like me,
you'll love this. I promise!
Prosciutto e Funghi - A bit oily but still yummy
Get the pizza of the week and you get free pitcher of Pepsi

Caylabne de Horror

Caylabne Resort circa 1990

Caylabne today.

Born and raised in Cavite, it's quite a shame to admit that this is my first time to visit Caylabne Bay Resort.

I wish I had a chance to visit Caylabne during its peak.  To say that the place needs major renovation is an understatement.  The rooms smell like molds, there’s not enough lights during night time, the roads need serious repair, the beach is full of trash, there's no hot water in the shower, among many others.  Oh wait!  My friends woke up with ants crawling in their bed.  It freaked them out of course!

Living room

There's only one restaurant in Caylabne -- El Patio Restaurant.  Everything is so expensive!  What made it even worse? The orders took forever to arrive.

Beef Tapa -- Tasty and tender
Kare-Kare -- a bit sweet for my taste, huge servings though
Pinaputok na Tilapia

After lunch, it's time for some photo-ops!

We wanted to go out and have dinner at Puerto Azul hoping for a better meal.  I've been there when I was a kid and I can barely remember any memories of how it looks like.  Since we have time and there's nothing else to do, we all agreed to check it out.

I can't keep my eyes off the road but I'm afraid I might see something, its nuts I know!

An hour drive in a long and dark road after, we finally reached Puerto Azul only to learn that there's no open and decent restaurant at 7pm.  Seriously?!  We decided to just go back to Caylabne Resort wishing that the restaurant is still open.  Thank goodness we arrived an hour before closing or else our dinner would consists of Skyflakes and a couple of Krispy Kreme donuts bought a day before.

On the table

The anchovies is too salty!
Shrimp penne -- it was okay, I finished half I think
Carbonara
Clubhouse sandwich

We waited for the right moment to order our free fruit shake, which was supposed to be by the beach but did not happened, only to be more disappointed.  Do you still remember how you were forced to drink your cough medicine as a kid? That's how it tasted, just 10 times sweeter.

Woke up the following day and made the most out of our stay at the resort.

Good thing I was in the company of great friends who can turn the disastrous weekend into a tolerable and somewhat enjoyable one.  Maybe if we went there on a Halloween, that would be an entirely different story.
