The Henry Manila: A Glimpse of the Past

A lovely retreat in the heart of the bustling city of Manila, The Henry will whisk you away to the colonial period you only read in books and see in movies and television. From the moment we entered the iron gate manned by the staff in a Guardia Civil uniform, I knew it was going to be an interesting experience as compared to our usual staycations in the city. After securing the car in the hotel's gravel parking lot, we were immediately greeted by the staff who offered to carry our bags and ushered us to the reception area. Our room was unavailable yet so we decided to have lunch at Apartment 1B, The Henry's in-house restaurant and situated just beside the hotel lobby.

After settling the bill, we were approached by the staff to inform us that our room was ready. She then brought us to the other refurbished house (there were at least 5 in the compound) where our room on the 2nd level was located. The hotel may look old but security was modern and topnotch. Keyless entry system and digital code door locks were installed for guests' peace of mind.

The Henry Manila has a total of 34 rooms with a two-bedroom suite, 4 suite rooms and 29 classic rooms. Ours was one of the classic rooms overlooking the vast gardens with 2 huge glass windows on both sides to allow natural light to come in. The windows have clear glass panels as the room is fully-airconditioned and so no mosquitoes/insects could enter the room.

Classic rooms can sleep up to 2 adults comfortably with amenities that include:

  •  A 27-sqm room with hardwood flooring and high ceiling
  • Comfortable queen sized or 2 single beds with bedside tables
  • Complimentary wireless internet
  • 32-inch LCD television with cable channels
  • Mini-bar with Pinoy favorite treats
  • A safety deposit box
  • Coffee and tea making facility
  • An old wardrobe cabinet
  • A well-lit modern toilet and bathroom

I get goose bumps everytime I hear the squeaking sound of opening and closing the cabinet door. Brings me back to my childhood days when my cousins would force me to watch Filipino horror movies because they know how afraid I am of ghosts, aswang, white lady, kapre, and the like.

The bathroom with its white fixtures, white lights and white tiles was way too bright for my taste. Not ideal for use in the middle of the night because the brightness of the room surely woke me up.

Should you fail to bring your favorite toiletries, The Henry provides generic shampoo, lotion, body wash and conditioner as well as toothbrush, vanity and shaving kits.

The Henry Manila has an outdoor pool right in the middle of the lush garden. If we were booked longer than a night, I would have jumped in and fully enjoy the privacy and serenity of the place.

Pros: Elegant mix of colonial + modern design, relaxing and charming vibe of the entire property, commendable customer service, convenient location along Pasay City, vast parking space to accommodate hotel guests and restaurant patrons and tight security for guests' safety.

Cons: Aside from the limited and pricey food options at the in-house Apartment 1B restaurant, we loved everything about The Henry Manila and we would definitely stay longer next time!
